H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu) and Influenza Information
Pediatric and Adolescent Center of Grand Prairie & Arlington continues to closely monitor the H1N1 (Swine Flu) and Influenza situation and will provide regular updates concerning any potential impact to the services we provide to our patients. Our team is ready to respond if the outbreak directly impacts our day-to-day operations.

A vaccine for the H1N1 virus is currently undergoing clinical trials. The CDC estimates that the vaccine will start shipping around October 2009. Initially, there will be only be a number of vaccines available and will be given to those most at risk. As always, a vaccine will be available to protect against seasonal influenza (the flu). Along with immunizing children for influenza, we encourage parents and caregivers to receive the vaccine as well. (Schedule Your Flu Shot Today! Below, we have listed everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO STAY HEALTHY ?

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol based hand sanitizers are also effective.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.) Keep away from others as much as possible to keep from making others sick.
Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures.
Be prepared in case you get sick and need to stay home for a week or so; a supply of over-the-counter medicines, alcohol-based hand rubs, tissues and other related items might be useful and help avoid the need to make trips out in public while you are sick and contagious
When calling our office for an appointment, please let our patient associates know if your child is experiencing flu symptoms. When checking in for your appointment, let our patient associate know if your child is running a fever so we can check their temperature and provide them medicine if necessary. Communication is KEY. There is no such thing as too much information.

WHAT PACGPA IS DOING TO HELP YOU STAY HEALTHY

Our staff will continue to monitor information from the CDC and the local health department. We will communicate these to you as we receive them.
If you or your child is experiencing flu-like symptoms, we will provide you and your child masks while waiting for your appointment.
If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms or if your child has been around anyone that has the flu, the physician may order the influenza quick test in the office. In asthmatic patients, these children may experience other symptoms associated with the flu. If needed, breathing treatments and other procedures may be ordered by the physician. Please know that these tests and procedures may extend the appointment time – therefore your patience is greatly appreciated as we provide your family thorough, quality care during this winter season.
Alcohol based hand sanitizers will be available at check in, check out, patient rooms, nurses station, and in every hallway. Please utilize the hand sanitizers as needed. Keep in mind that alcohol-based products are toxic if ingested by children. (The amount left on hands after use is not a concern.) Please keep these products out of the reach of children and supervise their use.
The flu vaccine will be available for everyone in your family. If your insurance does not cover the vaccine, we will have them for you for $25 per shot. Flumist, the intranasal vaccine, will also be available for $30 per dose. (Schedule Your Flu Shot Today! Be Safe Vaccinate!) link to WCC appointment request form
We will hold flu clinics throughout the winter season beginning late September 2009. A calendar will be posted for dates and times. These are Nurses visit only. You will not be seeing the doctor.
